چکیده

[1] The nitric oxide (NO) density in the lower thermosphere has been calculated by a photochemical model for NOx and compared with measured NO densities from Student Nitric Oxide Explorer (SNOE). At higher latitudes the most important contributor for NO density increases is energetic electron precipitation. The electron energy is estimated in two ways, from auroral ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray measurements obtained from Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) and Polar Ionospheric X-ray Imaging Experiment (PIXIE) on board the Polar satellite and from ground magnetometer measurements. For the time intervals when the Polar satellite was not above the northern hemisphere, a parameterization of the electron energy flux from ground magnetic measurements was used. This parameterization was based on data from the SuperMAG database compared to UVI/PIXIE derived electron energy fluxes. The negative perturbation in the northward ground magnetic component is found to be linearly related to the precipitating electron energy flux. The 4-day period studied is from 30 April (day 120) until 4 May 1998, where the onset of a geomagnetic storm occurred 2 May (day 122). The results of the comparisons show an overall larger modeled nitric oxide density at auroral latitudes than what was measured by SNOE. The largest discrepancies were for the day of the storm onset, when the background atmosphere was more distorted by Joule heating. The next day the agreement between the model and the observations was far better, which might be due to less amount of Joule heating this day.

Nitric Oxide in the E-region*

-Rocket and satellite studies have demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO) in the thermosphere is almost always more abundant at higher than at lower latitudes. The ultraviolet nitric oxide spectrometer (UVNO) on the Atmosphere Explorer C (AE-C) spacecraft observed longitudinal asymmetries in thermospheric NO with greater abundances existing in the longitudinal sector associated with the magnetic p...

3-D GCM modelling of thermospheric nitric oxide during the 2003 Halloween storm

Numerical modelling of thermospheric temperature changes associated with periods of high geomagnetic activity are often inaccurate due to unrealistic representation of nitric oxide (NO) densities and associated 5.3-μm radiative cooling. In previous modelling studies, simplistic parameterisations of NO density and variability have often been implemented in order to constrain thermospheric temper...

High correlations between temperature and nitric oxide in the thermosphere

Obtaining accurate predictions of the neutral density in the thermosphere has been a long-standing problem. During geomagnetic storms the auroral heating in the polar ionospheres quickly raises the temperature of the thermosphere, resulting in higher neutral densities that exert a greater drag force on objects in low Earth orbit. Rapid increases and decreases in the temperature and density may ...

Processes of equatorial thermal structure at Jupiter: An analysis of the Galileo temperature profile with a threedimensional model

[1] The Jupiter Thermospheric General Circulation Model (JTGCM) calculates the global dynamical structure of Jupiter’s thermosphere self-consistently with its global thermal structure and composition. The main heat source that drives the thermospheric flow is high-latitude Joule heating. A secondary source of heating is the auroral process of particle precipitation. Global simulations of Jovian...

Jupiter Thermospheric General Circulation Model (JTGCM): Global structure and dynamics driven by auroral and Joule heating

[1] A growing multispectral database plus recent Galileo descent measurements are being used to construct a self-consistent picture of the Jupiter thermosphere/ionosphere system. The proper characterization of Jupiter’s upper atmosphere, embedded ionosphere, and auroral features requires the examination of underlying processes, including the feedbacks of energetics, neutral-ion dynamics, compos...
